David R. Godine:
David R. Godine is a small, independent publishing house located in Boston, Massachusetts, producing between 20 and 30 titles per year and maintaining an active reprint program.

At Godine, quality has remained foremost. Their aim is to identify the best work and to produce it in the best way possible. All books are printed on acid-free paper. Many hardcovers are still bound in full cloth. The list is deliberately eclectic and features works that many other publishers can't or won't support, books that won't necessarily become bestsellers but that still deserve publication. In a world of spin-offs and commercial 'product', Godine's list stands apart by offering original fiction and non-fiction of the highest rank, rediscovered masterworks, translations of outstanding world literature, poetry, art, photography, and beautifully designed books for children.

David R. Godine has received numerous awards, including the Carey-Thomas award for Excellence in Publishing (1976), the Boston Globe Literary Press Award (1987), the first New England Booksellers Annual Award (1989), and the Leipzig Internationalen Buchkunst-Austellung (1989). In 1984, Bookbuilders of Boston awarded Godine the W. A. Dwiggins Award for maintaining standards of excellence in book production.

Additionally, on July 1, 2002, John Martin, the founder and for 36 years the publisher of Black Sparrow Press, closed down his shop in Santa Rosa, California. Black Sparrow Press was reborn as Black Sparrow Books at David R. Godine, Publisher.

'David Godine is a remarkable publisher ... He is determined to prove that the day of elegant books has not vanished. And he does prove it. Elegantly'The New York Times.

'Godine books are not "beautiful" in the glossy fashion of the coffee-table books that flood the market at Christmastime. They are instead flawlessly produced examples of the arts of printing and bookbinding, exquisitely understated'Newsweek.

'Thank God some publishers, such as David R. Godine, march to a different drummer. So long as publishers copy one another ... the trend of the moment dominates. Initiative and courage are necessary to battle mass thinking, and Godine, a small Boston publisher, has them'Cincinnati Enquirer.

Northcote House:
Northcote House's Writers and Their Work series, launched in 1994 in association with the British Council, won immediate acclaim for its publication of brief but rigorous critical examinations of the works of distinguished writers and schools of writing. The series embraces the best of modern literary theory and criticism, and features studies of many popular late-20th-century writers, as well as the canonical figures of literature and important literary genres. Further major European writers are to be included and each of Shakespeare's plays will eventually be the subject of an individual study.

An important element of the series is to bring neglected or marginalised writers to a wider readership, to represent fully the rich diversity of post-colonial writing and to show the breadth and density of women's writing through the centuries. With more than 200 titles published or in preparation, and many more planned, Writers and Their Work, is becoming an authoritative and original critical encyclopaedia of British, Commonwealth and European literature.

Writers and Their Work has brought to a fine art the short study of individual authors and is unrivalled in its range. Written by the foremost critics of the day, the series presents studies of the central figures of World Literature, from Beowulf to the present. In addition Writers and Their Work is developing a number of specialist titles: * Womens writing * Postcolonial writing * Regional writing * Living novelists * Living poets * American Writers

Writers and Their Work is unique, has perfected the short critical work and ... Offers brief, affordable, readable critiques; Offers exciting, cutting edge, comprehensive scholarship; Offers state of the art criticism and theory; Offers teachers what their students need to know; Offers students exemplary models of original critical assessment; Offers a quick read packed with information and ideas; Offers crisp but penetrating analysis of major writing in English; Offers up-to-date bibliographies and bibliographical outlines; Offers a series that combines fun and gravitas.

Real Reads:
Real Reads is a new children’s publisher specialising in books for children aged 8–13 that introduce them to the concepts and historical perspectives of the great works of fiction. Each text is a retelling of a classic work in 3,500–4,500 words, with colour illustrations throughout to bring them to life.

‘The idea has been to create easy-to-read and fun versions of all our favourite classics to appeal to children aged 8 – 13. The books have been rewritten using reader-friendly words and sentences, but retain much of the style and mood of the originals. To aid understanding and to promote study they include descriptions of the characters, together with discussion points on the book’s major themes, styles and symbols – and vivid colour illustrations to bring everything to life’- John Button of Real Reads
