A Companion to Thomas More brings together many of the world's leading More scholars in order to offer the first comprehensive reassessment of the man and his works for a quarter of a century. The volume freshly examines the competing versions of More the man and presents a new overview of nearly every aspect of his canon.

Studies of More's life veer between hagiography and demystification. In the present volume, a balanced view of More emerges from both the recovery of original sources and analysis of the most recent perspectives on More's life and times. New light is shed on More's letters.

More's role as humanist scholar is reinterpreted: his friendship with Erasmus is discussed as well as his engagement with the classical past. There is a reassessment of More's views on female education and of his The Lyfe of Johan Picus, written for a female friend. Similarly, his Latin poems are considered in relation to those of Erasmus.

More's major work, Utopia, is freshly and substantially analysed. His Historia Richardi Tertii is located and examined in the context of Tudor historiography. The polemical writings are studied and his Tower Works are surveyed anew.

This book offers an indispensable guide to all who are interested in More's life and works.
