The Golden Ass has been the darling of illustrated books ever since the invention of printing. It is easy to see why. Apuleius' comic masterpiece, originally composed in Latin in the second century A.D., has something for everyone - magic, misadventure, mistaken identity, and even a hint of romance.

The story traces the hilarious misadventures of a young man a tad too curious about magic and too greedy for his own good. Hoping to change himself into an owl, he mistakenly turns himself into a donkey instead and in that guise is subsequently sold, stolen, or otherwise shunted from one master to the next. Along the way, he encounters love and heartbreak, abuse and affection. He also sees firsthand the underbelly of the sprawling Roman Empire, with all its saints and villains, its venal priests and unscrupulous merchants, until he is transformed back into human form by the intervention of a goddess.

The Golden Ass is not only a story of comic redemption; it is also an early romp in the art of storytelling that has left an indelible mark on subsequent literature - from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and Boccaccio's Decameron to Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Disney's film classic, Pinocchio.

M.D. Usher's creative adaptation of the tale of the feckless Prudentius brings the story to life 'for young readers of all ages'. Classical scholars will admire its faithfulness to the original as well as its clever innovations, while readers new to Apuleius - young and old alike - will enjoy its freshness and accessibility. T. Motley's illustrations, sprightly, thoroughly modern, and graphically sophisticated, add even more tang to this 21st-century version of a timeless tale.

M. D. Usher is a professor of Classics at the University of Vermont. In addition to publishing scholarly books in the field of classics, he is the author of two other books for children and an opera libretto in Latin based on the poetry of Virgil. T. Motley is an illustrator and cartoonist. He teaches cartooning at The School of the Visual Arts and illustration at Pratt Manhattan.
