Style is central to our conception of the Renaissance, but it has seldom been written about apart from studies of formal rhetoric and the graphic arts. These interdisciplinary essays demonstrate that style is a fertile juncture of literature, culture, politics, fashion, history, science, theology, and genre. Taken together, the essays point to the Renaissance and Restoration as two periods that find unity in underlying assumptions about the value of individual expression and the high stakes of aesthetic debate for transcending matters of transient fashion and tradition-bound genres.

The late Harriett Hawkins was a senior research fellow of Linacre College, Oxford University, and author of several influential works of Renaissance literary criticism and cultural studies such as Likenesses of Truth in Elizabethan & Restoration Drama; Poetic Freedom & Poetic Truth; The Devil's Party; Classics & Trash: Traditions & Taboos in 'High' Literature & Popular Modern Genres; and Strange Attractors: Literature, Culture & Chaos Theory. Her friends, family, and colleagues pay tribute to her sense of style - personal and literary - with essays inspired by her own interdisciplinary interests and high scholarly standards.

Allen Michie is an Assistant Professor of English at Iowa State University. Eric Buckley is an emeritus fellow of Linacre College, Oxford University.
